I am a BSc computing science student as my final year project I am researching into virtual exhibitions and the us of new technologies at museums.

I would be very grateful if anyone could suggest any useful links, books.

Thank you.

My particular interest areas are: the history of virtual exhibitions; the first virtual exhibition held at a museum; the effect of virtual exhibitions on the society.

If anyone has any suggestions, please do help.

hi lizakarim,

search for net.condition in google, that was a virtual exhib at the Centre for Media Arts, which is probably interesting for your context. see http://www.medienkunstnetz.de for texts on the history of new media art, virtual exhibs etc.
see also rhizome.com

regards, lena

Hi Lizakarim (and all),
I am a graduate student in the technology in education program at Harvard and am also interested in virtual museums. I have found some useful resources through searching "museums and the web" in google. Does any one have recommendations for additional museum websites I might visit that contain communities of practice and/or online inquiry communities?
Thanks,
Nicole

I am an undergrad in Anthropology who has discovered in the course of trying to find academic resources for researching a class assignment on the topic of online or electronic museums that there is a definite void in the field.
I'm not sure exactly what direction you are taking this, but I suggest you look at the volumes edited by David Bearman of the Museums and the Web conferences held in Toronto. I haven't been able to get ahold of the 2004 proceedings yet, but it appears to be the only major resource that I can find that talks directly about this topic. And in the bibliographies of the papers no doubt you will find background sources to help with the history.
