Online newsfeeds provide an excellent way for museums to make timely
information on their websites available for linking from other news-based
websites. This is an additional way to attract visitors to a museum website
who may not have visited otherwise. A disadvantage of external links through
standard search engines is that they are not updated very often. However,
newsfeed technology allows updating of selected news stories in minutes for
other selected news sites, rather than the weeks that it normally takes a
search engine to update links to a specific website. This is an exciting,
new and relevant technology to enliven museum websites in a dynamic manner.
For an example of the use of this technology, see the
Museophile museum
discussion forums website that aggregates over 60 museum-related newsfeeds
from electronic mailing lists and other sources located around the world
using a single web-based interface in a personalized manner for individual
users.
The
24 Hour Museum
has recently included
an
RSS newsfeed on its website which is now
available from the Museophile site.
