The first Jodi Mattes Access Award for accessible museum-related websites has been awarded to the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich at the RNIB Talking Images conference on 20 May 2003. This exemplary website demonstrates that making a website accessible to the disabled is certainly not incompatible with making it dynamic and interesting to others. The Tate were commended for their i-Map project making their Matisse Picasso exhibition accessible to the blind.

The award is named after Jodi Mattes (1973-2001) who worked on disabled access projects for the RNIB and the British Museum, including the COMPASS project.

The judges included representatives of the Museums & Galleries Disability Association (MAGDA), the UK government Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries (Resource), the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) and the Museums Computer Group (MCG).

Nominated websites:

  1. Australian Museum spiders site
  2. Disability Museum library
  3. Hampshire Museums Service
  4. London’s Transport Museum
  5. Museophile accessibility website
  6. My Brighton and Hove
  7. The National Gallery, London
  8. National Maritime Museum (Winner)
  9. Tate i-Map project (Commended)
