The Roberson Museum & Science Center will be hosting an innovative and thought provoking art exhibit entitled: Cosmos & Chaos: A Cultural Paradox from February 1 • April 30th, 2004. It will showcase the artwork of several regional artists who have achieved international recognition, including faculty members from Syracuse University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Elmira College, Ithaca College, Binghamton University and Broome Community College.

The museum is also proud to announce that internationally renowned artist, Lucian Freud, will be a featured artist along with critically acclaimed artist Eric Fischl. German-born Freud is the grandson of Sigmund Freud. Robert Hughes, the Australian art critic, described Freud as "the greatest living realist painter." More recently, others have called him "the greatest painter of our time." Mr. Fischl's work helped reinvent the traditional medium of painting with contemporary relevance. Fischl has earned a reputation as a New Image painter of the post-modern movement, where he became known for his psychologically charged paintings - often controversial and provocative.

This event will not only celebrate our regional talent, but also offer our community a rare opportunity to experience the finest living international artists today.

EXHIBIT OF PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMY COLLECTIONS REVISITS TIMES OF CHANGE 1913-1945: MASTERPIECES OF THE PERMANENT COLLECTION

PHILADELPHIA• The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts will explore the development of modernism in American art with a featured exhibition, Times of Change 1913-1945: Masterpieces of the Permanent Collection. The exhibition from the Pennsylvania Academy collections•showing Jun. 14, 2003-Apr. 4, 2004•traces the growth of American art from the landmark Armory Show of 1913, which introduced explosive new ideas of modernism to many Americans, through the end of World War II.

Complementing Times of Change is the Pennsylvania Academy's recently installed Vivian O. and Meyer P. Potamkin Gallery. The new gallery, opened in February, contains 10 modern American masterpieces gifted to the Pennsylvania Academy from the private collection of the late Vivian O. and Meyer P. "Pat” Potamkin.

Drawn from the Pennsylvania Academy's permanent collection, Times of Change illustrates the tremendous energy of the 20th century at a critical juncture in America's history. Artists witnessed tremendous and rapid economic, social, geographic and cultural changes driven by advances in industry and technology. Their work recorded the rise of cities and the urban working class, social upheaval and the disparity of wealth, new roles for women, the influx of immigrant labor and the growing tensions of race and class relations.

While witnessing such rapid changes, artists were also faced with decisions about the direction of modern art, derived from European models and developed at home. Artists of the time chose between realism and abstraction, or forged their own stylistic advances by exploring combinations of the two.

Times of Change will feature works by Pennsylvania Academy alumni John Marin, Charles Demuth and Arthur B. Carles, and works by Milton Avery, Isabel Bishop, Edward Hopper, Stuart Davis, Georgia O'Keeffe, Horace Pippin, Florine Stettheimer and many others.

In addition, the Potamkin Gallery includes what many believe to be the most significant works from the couple's modern American art collection, renowned for its remarkable vision. "The Potamkin 10” consists of eight paintings•including Georgia O's Red Canna, Maurice Prendergast's Promenade, and Marsden Hartley's Flower Abstraction•along with Mary

WHAT SOUND DOES AN ELK MAKE? FAMILY EXHIBITION ACADEMY ANIMALIA CREATED BY THE PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMY OF THE FINE ARTS

PHILADELPHIA• A light-hearted exhibition designed for children and families, Academy Animalia, livens walls of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts this summer. On display Jun. 7-Aug. 31, Academy Animalia is a conglomerate of artworks of animals from the Pennsylvania Academy's collections. The exhibition offers an opportunity for children to indulge a love of animals, and sparks an interest in discovery (bull elk make a high-pitched call sounding like a flute or high bugle). Zany storyteller Vicky Towne also joins the Pennsylvania Academy at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thurs., Aug. 7 for a family performance, "Nitwits, Numbskulls and Noodleheads,” to share stories of silly animals and goofy people.

Included in the exhibition are elephants (Edith McMurtie's The Circus, 1920), elk (Horace Pippin's The Elk, 1945), herons (Frank Benson's Great White Herons, 1933), and other exotic creatures to intrigue young viewers.

In addition to animals not seen in the Pennsylvania wilds, Academy Animalia will also include familiar creatures such as cows (George Caleb Bingham's Pastoral, 1832), oxen (Milton Avery's Oxcart - Blue Sea, 1943), a goat (Victor Higgins' The Widower, 1923) and many more animals of every description.

Academy Animalia at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts continues a series of special features highlighting Academy collections, alumni, history and more. These features include the concurrent patriotic exhibition George Washington: Picturing a Legend (through Sept. 17) and the exhibit of Academy collections Times of Change: Artists' Choices 1913-1945 (Jun. 14, 2003-Apr. 4, 2004), culminating in a grand celebration of the Pennsylvania Academy's 200th Anniversary in 2005 with the opening of the Samuel M. V. Hamilton Building. The new building is currently under construction at Broad & Cherry Streets, adjacent to the historic Furness-Hewitt museum.
