I am an undergrad in Anthropology who has discovered in the course of trying to find academic resources for researching a class assignment on the topic of online or electronic museums that there is a definite void in the field.
I'm not sure exactly what direction you are taking this, but I suggest you look at the volumes edited by David Bearman of the Museums and the Web conferences held in Toronto. I haven't been able to get ahold of the 2004 proceedings yet, but it appears to be the only major resource that I can find that talks directly about this topic. And in the bibliographies of the papers no doubt you will find background sources to help with the history.
